Rihanna Is the New Face of Balmain

Rihanna was busy showing off her piles of designer holiday gifts on Instagram all last week, but this morning, she had a little present for us: She unveiled her first-ever Balmain campaign for Spring 2014. The singer might have been dropping hints about this over the summer, when she posted a number of photos of herself at Balmain headquarters in Paris with Olivier Rousteing, the brand’s creative director, on Instagram.

Shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin and styled by Mel Ottenberg, the images were captured last month in New York City, and will make their global debut in January 2014. This isn’t Rihanna’s first time as the face of a major fashion brand — she’s previously starred in campaigns for Emporio Armani and Gucci.

“Not compromising, fresh, modern, the icon of my generation, Rihanna embodies my vision of Balmain in this new campaign,” Rousteing said in a press release. “In front of the camera, she makes you feel like she is the only girl in the world.”

Oh Olivier, how we do love a clever song lyric tie-in. Especially when it’s true, although we’re pretty sure Rihanna has that effect on people even when she’s not in front of a camera.

Lady Gaga Gets Naked, Spreads It for V

After years of flouncing around (and falling down) in provocative getups and impossibly giant platforms, has Lady Gaga finally run out of shocking outfits? Sure seems that way–the pop star is totally, completely, like no-buts-about-it-but-also-all-butts-about-it naked (besides a rather unfortunate hairpiece from the Amanda Bynes Wig Collection) in the upcoming issue of V Magazine.

Photographed by Inez & Vinoodh, who released a sneak peek on their blog this weekend, the shoot is a spread in more senses than one–and also a feat in Photoshop wizardry. We’ve all seen Gaga’s nipples before, escaping from dresses and suffocating beneath electrical tape–but curiously, it’s only when she’s stark nakedthey seem to pull a vanishing act. More perplexing, still, is the discovery that Lady Gaga has no visible labia–or any discernible genitalia, for that matter, in the photo. Hmm… That’s not cool V Photoshoppers: Every girl deserves a vagina–even Lady Gaga.

Old Jewish Men Have Valuable Advice for Miley Cyrus

The chanteuse Miley Cyrus, a subject of much controversy these past several weeks, mainly owing to her performance at the MTV "Video Music Awards" (among other things, she mimicked masturbation with an oversized foam finger, twerked, and, unforgivably, sexualized teddy bears), is unhappy, despite her temporal success, with some of the advice she has lately received.

In an interview with something called Hunger TV, she complained that unnamed senior corporate types are "out of touch" with the desires of today's youth. "With magazines, with movies, it's always weird when things are targeted for young people, yet they're driven by people that are, like, 40 years too old." She went on, "It can't be like this 70-year-old Jewish man that doesn't leave his desk all day, telling me what the clubs want to hear."

I was saddened by this comment, because she carries the name of one of the great heroes of Jewish history -- the Persian Emperor Cyrus the Great, who freed the Jews from Babylonian captivity -- and also because, in my experience, 70-year-old Jewish men (and 80-year-old Jewish men) are often sources of great wisdom and counsel. Cyrus's career, as Slate's John Dickerson recently suggested on Twitter, is evidence of the moral, spiritual and creative exhaustion of much of American culture, and her comment made me think that she could stand to listen to some wise thoughts from old Jewish men.

I asked three friends -- Erica Brown, a widely respected Torah teacher in Washington; Rabbi David Wolpe, of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles; and Rabbi Andy Bachman, of Congregation Beth Elohim in New York -- to share with me some relevant quotations.

Wolpe offered these, from the late Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and the late non-rabbi Saul Bellow. Heschel: "Self-respect is the root of discipline: The sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to oneself." And Bellow: "You can spend the entire second half of your life recovering from the mistakes of the first half."

Brown offered this, from the founder of Reconstructionist Judaism, Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan: "To believe in God means to take for granted that it is man's destiny to rise above the brute and to eliminate all forms of violence and exploitation from human society." And this, from David Ben-Gurion: "Thought is a strenuous art -- few practice it, and then only at rare times."

Bachman suggested these words from Judah HaNasi: "Three things shorten a person's days and years: Being given a Torah scroll to read and refusing to read it, being given a cup of blessing to say grace and refusing to say it, and taking on airs of authority." Along the same lines, he suggested this from Simeon ben Eliazer: "If young people say to you, 'Build the Temple,' do not heed them. But if elders say to you, 'Destroy the Temple,' heed them. For building done by young people may be equivalent to destruction, while the destruction done by old people is equivalent to building."

Bachman went on to explain by e-mail the meaning embedded in this quote. "Miley might do well to look at the landscape of hubris-infused rock stars who tumble into self-destruction, usually out of a misunderstood sense of their own power and popularity (dangerous addictions in their own right that only get worse when drugs and alcohol get mixed in)."

I would offer Cyrus three more thoughts, from old Jews who have succeeded in her industry.

From Leonard Cohen: "The older I get, the surer I am that I'm not running the show." Cohen also made this wise statement: "When you stop thinking about yourself all the time, a certain sense of repose overtakes you."

Bob Dylan, in "Love Minus Zero, No Limit," sang, "In the dime stores and bus stations/ People talk of situations/ Read books, repeat quotations/ Draw conclusions on the wall/ Some speak of the future/ My love she speaks softly/ She knows there's no success like failure/ And that failure's no success at all."

Finally, apropos of the licentious misuse of bears, this, from Paul Simon: "Someone told me it's all happening at the zoo. I do believe it, I do believe it's true."

Emmy Rossum poses topless for Esquire

After three seasons of Shameless, it's no longer an unusual occurrence for Emmy Rossum to get naked in front of the camera.

So it's no surprise she looks -- and sounds -- totally comfortable in a new spread for Esquire, in which she is in turns bouncing around her Beverly Hills home via Skype and posing topless for photographer James White.

She introduces Cinnamon, her tiny dog -- with a big penis that Rossum can't help but mention -- and her cat, Fiona G. Kitty, who was a stray and a Chicago veterinarian convinced her had cancer.

"I hate cats," she explained. "But this cancer cat made me feel bad, so I was like, Okay, I’ll take her back to L. A. and give her her last six months of pain-free life."

But upon taking the cat to Los Angeles, another vet set the record straight.

"I said, Yeah, but too bad about the cancer. And he said, What cancer? And I’m like, You know, the lump on her stomach. And he’s like, You mean the hernia? I can take that out when I neuter her. She’s gonna live twenty-five years! And I was like, You [expletive] cat with your lying cancer sob story."

Still, it was another brush with death that brings out Rossum's serious side.

"It’s amazing how things can be put into perspective for you so easily," she said. "Last weekend, I was pulling out of my house, and I saw a body in the road and blood everywhere. This guy had been hit by a car."

"I called 911 and stayed with him," she recalled. "You see how lucky you are to just be alive. All the Hollywood [expletive] and accolades and money really doesn’t matter. It just gives you a slightly nicer house and slightly nicer food and slightly shinier hair."

Let's Talk About Miley Cyrus' Bob Hairstyle

In case you didn't notice because you were too distracted by her twerking-on-Santa antics, it looks like maybe Miley Cyrus could be ready to go back to longer hair. The never-a-dull-moment singer tried on this bob haircut over the weekend, wearing a chin-grazing blond wig with bangs.

Interestingly, as Beth pointed out last week, Selena Gomez has been wearing a similar bob-with-bangs hairstyle onstage.
